Your Guide to Effort Touches in FC 24

EA FC 24 introduced a wealth of new features into the amazing game franchise. We’re going to focus on just one of them today – effort touches. Nail these, and buy FIFA coins, and you’ll be doing absolutely awesome in your Ultimate Team matches.

Just What is an Effort Touch?

We remember the original days of FIFA, as far back as FIFA 96, where you couldn’t do much in the game other than shoot and score. Oh, and some passes. You also had this odd feature where you could guarantee a goal from every single corner. Some of the newer features in the game can be downright baffling, so let’s start by talking about what effort touches actually are.

Effort touches, essentially, allow you to quickly change the direction of the ball when you’re in possession of it. This can be when you receive possession for the first time, or in the midst of a dribble.

So, let’s say that the ball is being dribbled by you. You pass it into the midfield. If you use an effort touch, the midfield can quickly tap it in an unexpected direction. When used correctly, this can open up a lot of space as your opponents will be caught off guard.

How to Make an Effort Touch

This is surprisingly easy, although bear in mind that we’ll only give the Xbox and PS controls here.

If you’re dribbling with the ball, hold either the R1 or RB button, depending on the controller you are using. Then quickly move your stick in the direction you want the ball to move.

If you’re about to receive the ball, just quickly move the stick in the direction you want the ball to move as soon as you receive the ball.

It’s pretty simple. There’s nothing you really need to think about when it comes to the timing of hitting the ball.

When to Make an Effort Touch

As with most moves in FC 24, you don’t want to be overusing them, as your opponent will end up getting wise to your tactics. It is essential that you use an effort touch at exactly the right moment.

We suggest that you only use effort touches if you feel that the opponent is committing to one side of the field a little bit too much. Effort touches work best when you can move the ball into an incredibly open area, so that your players can make a run onto it. You want to move them to an area where your opponent will need to rotate their player around the get to the ball.

Trust us, the more you play, the more you’ll know when you should be using effort touches. If you want to have a bit of a practice, you can always use effort touches in the kick-off mode of the game. It is probably the best way to experiment with the various new features.
